TOPEKA (KSNT) — Families at the Topeka Zoo got an early start to Easter celebrations Saturday, April 4, as the Topeka Zoo hosted its 14th annual “Eggstravaganza,” an event that has become a holiday tradition for many in the capital city.
The event featured Easter egg hunts designed specifically for the zoo’s animals, with staff spending months preparing more than 80 animal-safe eggs for the celebration.
Animal Curator Shanna Simpson said the event continues to draw families back year after year.
“People come, and they plan to go to their favorite animals to see the animal Easter egg hunt,” Simpson said.
She said the annual event has grown into a community tradition.
“It’s really fun to see the community know this event and what it is now, and they’re just used to it, and it’s become part of their family tradition,” Simpson said.
Visitors also got a behind-the-scenes look at some of the zoo’s newest residents.
Taz and Kiona are two black bear cubs recently rescued by the Topeka Zoo. Zookeepers are currently working with the cubs and hope to introduce them into the larger bear enclosure by the end of the month alongside Val, the bear already living there.
