KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Lawrence police officer who served multiple departments in the city dating back to 2021 passed away in an off-duty death. Lawrence police say Officer Zachary Garcia-Kerns died on April 3.
He was 28 years old.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is leading his death investigation, but no foul play is suspected, according to the department.

Officer Garcia-Kerns began with the KU Police Department in October of 2021, moving to the Lawrence Police Department in November of 2023, according to a news release.
The release mentions he’s an organ donor who could help save the lives of as many as 75 people.
Funeral service details haven’t been shared yet.
