TOPEKA (KSNT) – A city official is giving an update this week on the ongoing Southwest Fairlawn Road construction project that started in the fall of last year.
We got in touch with Amanda Knowland, infrastructure communications specialist with the City of Topeka, on April 8 to learn more about where things stand with the Southwest Fairlawn Road project. City workers kicked things off with this project in August 2025, with the work consisting of the road between Southwest 28th Street and Southwest 22nd Place.
“Sanitary sewer work is about 90% complete; waterline work is more than halfway complete at this time; and contractors have just begun work on storm sewer replacements,” Knowland said.
Knowland also said the work is on schedule and is still set to be completed by October this year. You can learn more about this project and other major Topeka street projects by clicking here.
What are city workers doing on Southwest Fairlawn Road?
City workers with Sunflower Paving are working on an extensive mill and overlay project on Southwest Fairlawn Road. This includes full-depth patch work, spot curb replacement, the modernization and replacement of some sidewalks and ramps along with repairs on a nearby bridge over the Shunga Creek.

The City of Topeka is also completely reconstructing the stormwater and conveyance system in this area by replacing corrugated metal pipes with a new, reinforced concrete box. The entire project costs around $8.1 million and is being funded through a mix of the citywide half-cent sales tax, federal, bonded and utility funds.
Below, you will find a presentation made at the Crestview Community Center in 2025 with additional information about the scope of the project.
