TOPEKA (KSNT) – From big Hollywood silver screens to Topeka, Washburn is getting ready to roll out the red carpet for an annual film festival on April 11.
Some Ichabods are getting the opportunity to show their films alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names. This would be the 7Th annual WIFI Film Festival.
A student-run organization presenting all kinds of films from student productions to local pieces and one Oscar qualifier, all chosen by a student academy. The festival was created to connect Washburn students and the community with the larger film festival, nationally and internationally.
Films won’t be the only thing presented – there will also be a list of keynote speakers at the Mulvane Art Museum, including Sebastian Twardosz ‘ keynote speech, “Breaking into Hollywood.”
“He started his career working for Tom Cruise’s production company at Paramount and has had an illustrious career of working for Disney, TV, Paramount, and all sorts of different big companies and more recently been really focused on working with young filmmakers and helping them launch their career, which is obviously very important for our students,” said Matthew Nyqulst, executive director of WIFI Film Festival.

“There are some incredible stories in the Midwest, and I think it’s really important that people recognize that Kansas isn’t just a flyover state,” said Jaema Bordelon, student public relations for WIFI Film Festival. “There’s a lot of talent here, there’s a lot of passion for the film industry, and I think it’s incredible that Topeka has an opportunity to have a platform like wi-fi to share their stories.”
The festival is free to attend, and runs on Saturday, April 11th, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library starting at 9:30 a.m. The award ceremony will be aired live on Facebook, Sunday, April 12th.
