TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center welcomed adults-only fun back to its exhibits Thursday night, hosting its first “Discovery in the Dark” event since 2019.
Adults 21 and older filled the center and the parking lot as they explored hands-on exhibits typically reserved for children, this time alongside friends and drinks from a pop-up bar.
The event raised money for the Discovery Center’s access programs, including Play Free and Medical Warriors. The program also provides free or reduced admission for children and families who need additional support. Proceeds from alcohol sales and admission fees go directly toward those programs.

Laura Burton, the center’s director of marketing, said the community was eager for the event’s return, with attendees lining up before doors opened at 6 p.m.
“All of those things are supported by this event,” Burton said. “So everybody who comes here tonight can know that not only are they having fun, but they’re making a positive impact for families in our community too.”
Burton said the night was a success and called it a full-circle moment, noting that some attendees had once visited the Discovery Center as children.
