TOPEKA (KSNT) – It’s National Property and Evidence Professionals’ Week, and we are taking a look at the Topeka Police Department’s Evidence Team.
This behind-the-scenes team is crucial in investigations and solving crimes. The group is in charge of collecting, storing and disposing of items from crime scenes.
They currently have over 180,000 pieces of evidence, boxed, bagged, labeled and stored. In 2025, they received 15,869 new pieces of evidence, but also safely destroyed over 24,000 pieces of closed case evidence.
“On a daily basis, we take all the evidence that’s turned in, all the items turned in by the officers overnight or over the weekend,” said supervisor of the Property and Evidence Team, Dennis Kisner. “We entered into a computer system to be used for a court date or a prosecution date, and we keep track of all the items.”
Without the help of evidence teams, using their skills to investigate, many crimes would not be solved.
