TOPEKA (KSNT) – Gas prices are going up for Kansas drivers, standing almost $1 higher than they were a year prior.
GasBuddy and AAA both report that Kansas drivers are witnessing higher on average prices for fuel this month than a year ago, a trend which is being noticed nationwide in the spring of 2026. While Kansans aren’t being hit with gas prices above $4 a gallon, as some people in other states are seeing, fuel costs currently stand nearly $1 higher this month than they did in 2025.
GasBuddy reports that gas prices in Topeka have increased by $0.17 in the last week, bringing the average up to $3.55 a gallon on April 13. Prices are around $0.45 per gallon higher than a month prior and about $0.77 higher than in 2025.

AAA reports the statewide average gas price in Kansas sits at around $3.50 per gallon. The statewide average gas price for 2025 sat at around $2.86 per gallon.
Nationally, gas prices stand at about $4.07 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. The national average has risen by nearly $0.40 per gallon from a month ago and sits at $0.93 higher than in 2025.
GasBuddy has tied the spike in gas prices to recent military actions taking place in Iran. The economic impact of U.S. operations against Iran and control over the important trade route of the Strait of Hormuz is prompting price increases in more than just the fuel market.
“Average gasoline prices surged for many Americans through the first half of last week before easing in some areas after oil prices slipped following President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “However, with a breakdown in talks and renewed escalation over the weekend, motorists should prepare for another round of price increases. The move toward a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is compounding global supply concerns and risks further disrupting flows, which pushed oil prices sharply higher in Sunday night trading. As a result, gasoline prices are likely to jump again this week, with diesel expected to follow, until there is a meaningful restoration of shipping through the Strait.”
