MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Manhattan firefighters rescued two people early Tuesday morning after a residential building caught on fire.
Vivienne Leyva with the City of Manhattan reported in a press release that Manhattan Fire Department personnel were called around 6:15 a.m. on April 14 to an address in the 500 block of Pierre Street regarding a building on fire. MFD crews arriving at the scene found a two-story residential structure on fire with smoke and flames visible from the second floor.
Firefighters arriving at the scene spotted two people on the roof of a porch at the residential building. One of the individuals, a passerby, had responded to the fire by bringing a ladder over and climbing onto the roof to help one of the structure’s occupants exit through a second-floor window.
Fire crews helped the two people escape from the burning residence before entering the structure to search for anyone else who might still be inside. The MFD found one person unconscious on the second floor, removing the individual from the building. Medical personnel took both of the residence’s occupants to a local hospital for treatment.

Leyva said there were four people living inside the home, with the other two have left the building prior to the arrival of fire crews. First responders took one dog from the residence to be checked out for injuries by veterinarians. Two dogs and a cat died as a result of the fire.
Leyva said the residence had two apartments inside. Firefighters estimated that $50,000 in losses can be attributed to contents damaged and about $75,000 in losses to structural damage. Firefighters have yet to identify the cause of the fire.
