TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local nonprofit is asking for the community’s help as it prepares for an upcoming donation drive to support people with disabilities.
The Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) will host a drive from April 27 through May 1 at its Topeka location, aiming to restock its supply of durable medical equipment. Staff said items like wheelchairs, shower chairs, shower benches and portable ramps are in high demand, with some supplies running low.
“There is such a great need for people that fall between the cracks,” said Judie Korbelik, assistant director of core services. “We’re really fortunate to have the opportunity to offer this program to be able to loan these out.”
The organization serves people with disabilities, their families and their communities across a 16-county area. Donated equipment is cleaned and loaned out to individuals who may not have access through insurance or other programs.

Many items can be borrowed for up to 90 days, with the option to extend if needed. Korbelik said the program helps fill gaps for people who may not qualify for coverage or are waiting on approvals.
Why will flags be at half-staff Friday in Kansas?
While the upcoming drive is focused on boosting inventory, donations are accepted year-round at all RCIL locations. In Topeka, people can drop off items during regular business hours without an appointment.
Organizers said lightly used equipment in good condition can go a long way in helping someone maintain their independence. You can drop off donations from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2200 SW 10th St. in Topeka. You can learn more about RCIL by visiting its website or by calling 877-929-7655.
