TOPEKA (KSNT) – A beloved public library in Meriden is being revamped.
The new location has room for more programs they enjoy hosting, like bingo and story time. They have crafting events as well as opportunities for people to play video games. The library is also excited to be able to have room for all these activities.
“The best part about the new location is that it will be in walking distance from the schools and they’ll have sidewalks that they can safely walk to. So, we’re we anticipate having a lot of traffic after school,” said director of Meriden-Ozawkie Public Library Drew Sams. “It’s right between the fire station and the gas station there, the drive will actually be on Miller Street. So, it’s not coming right off the highway. So, that way, as I said, the kids can safely access the library from school.”
This district library covers around 4,500 people, all from the city of Meriden, Ozawkie, Ozawkie Township and Rock Creek Township. Their summer reading program has around 430 members. Around 50 to 80 people come in to check out their books every day.
“We have a we do have a big amount of kids for story time, and we’ve had to go over to the Methodist church, or the Methodist church is very, very giving, they’re always of letting us use it,” said the former director of Meriden Ozawkie library Jerie Tichnor. “But we there’s no way that we had room here. “

“It’s just a great place for our community to connect,” Sams said. “A lot of people just think it’s checking out books, but it’s not. It’s so much more than that. It really is a community hub.”
This upgrade is projected to be done by January of next year.
