TOPEKA (KSNT) — A ceremonial tree planting Friday will mark the first of 31 trees the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation (SCP+R) will add throughout its parks.
On Arbor Day, SCP+R will kick off the holiday on April 24 with a tree planting ceremony in Gage Park. in the rock garden area. It’s the beginning of an initiative to get 30 additional trees planted in the county.
“We recently added about 30 saplings to our nursery with plans to grow them out for park trees in a few years,” SCP+R Park District Manager Tom Hammer said. “These include Chinkapin Oak and Chinese Fringe Tree.”
SCP+R’s Ashley Gilfillan said the trees do more for the community besides just beautification. They can help combat climate change, improve air quality, provide shade and enhance quality of life for all people in the area.
