KANSAS CITY, Mo. β A second child has died from their injuries after a large fire broke out at an Overland Park apartment complex over the weekend.
The Overland Park Fire Department announced Thursday morning, βIt is with profound sadness that we report a second child who had been hospitalized following the apartment fire at the Sheridan Ridge Apartments on Saturday morning has died due to their injuries.β
The news comes just two days after the fire department announced the death of the first child, who was also hospitalized following the weekend incident. Their names and ages have not been released.
According to OPFD, at about 3 a.m. Saturday, crews were called to the Sheridan Ridge Apartment complex at 83rd and Farley Street on reports of a large fire. Firefighters from Lenexa and Shawnee were also called to the scene.
When the first fire crew arrived, they reported smoke and fire from a two-story apartment and two victims on the roof of the building.
As the firefighters began rescuing the victims, crews found two others inside a second-story bedroom. Another victim was later found on the ground outside the building.
One adult and two children were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The other adult was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
It was later announced on Tuesday evening that one of the children had died from their injuries. Now, two fatalities have been reported.
There is no update on the condition of the other adult, who remains in the hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by OPFD.
