SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – Workers have reopened a section of Auburn Road near Topeka this week after completing a major reconstruction project in the area.
Amanda Monhollon with Shawnee County Public Works said that Southwest Auburn Road has reopened to through traffic as of Monday, April 27. This follows completion of Phase III of the Southwest Auburn Road reconstruction project.
Monhollon said the project consisted of the construction of two roundabouts, including one at the intersection of Southwest 29th Street and Auburn Road which opened in November last year. The project also included improvements to Southwest Auburn Road that were completed in the winter/spring of 2026.
Workers closed a part of Southwest Auburn Road in September 2024 as part of a three-phase roundabout and road reconstruction project. Curt Niehaus with Shawnee County Public Works reported to 27 News earlier in April the project was nearing completion with a finish date set for the end of May.

Monhollon said that, thanks to the contractor’s dedication to finishing the project, the road is now open more than a month ahead of schedule. She said the public should follow any posted signs while traveling through the area.
