TOPEKA (KSNT) – As Kansas City prepares to host World Cup matches this summer, Topeka is getting in on the soccer momentum with a brand‑new event designed to bring fast‑paced indoor action to the Capital City.
The Stormont Vail Events Center has officially announced the Concrete Cup Street Soccer Tournament, a 3V3 “street-style” tournament launching in June. The event marks the first time the events center has hosted a competition of this kind, and organizers said they hope it becomes an annual tradition.
Futsal, a variation of soccer played indoors, uses a heavier, low‑bounce ball, no goalies and flat‑bottom shoes instead of cleats. The smaller court and quicker touches create a faster, more technical style of play, something organizers believe will appeal to both seasoned players and newcomers.
Carlos Bellosta, a marketing coordinator for Stormont Vail Events Center and Concrete Cup Street Soccer Tournament director, said the timing was intentional.
“With games going on this summer within an hour, that was for sure a big inspiration,” Bellosta said. “And we think there’s a big Topeka soccer community here — we wanted something for them to enjoy and grow their love for the game.”
The Concrete Cup will feature 13 divisions, including 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, high school and adult brackets for men’s, women’s and co‑ed teams. Youth divisions are capped at six teams each. Adult men’s and women’s divisions will compete for a $1,000 cash prize, while all other divisions will receive trophies.
Bellosta told 27 News each team is guaranteed at least three games, with the top four advancing to semifinals and finals. Registration costs $240 per team, with a minimum of three players and a maximum of six.
Organizers said the tournament is designed to offer something for every skill level.
“There’s a little bit for everyone,” Bellosta said. “Coed is more for fun — and then the competitive divisions are for people going for that thousand dollars.”
To preview the action, 27 News Morning Anchor Victoria Calhoun and 27 News Storm Track Meteorologist Ely Millard hit the court for a friendly match against members of the Stormont Vail Events Center team. A quick introduction to the speed and intensity players can expect in June.

Beyond the competition, organizers said the event offers a chance for local athletes to stay active during the offseason and escape the summer heat.
Carnival to visit Topeka for 11 days of fun and rides
“It gets super hot outside, and this is a good way for people to play in the offseason,” Bellosta said. “June 20th, it’s going to be hot outside. But inside, in the AC, people can just enjoy some soccer.”
Registration for the Concrete Cup is now open on the Stormont Vail Events Center’s website. The tournament takes place on June 20 at the Stormont Vail Events Center.
