TOPEKA (KSNT) – It’s National Teacher Appreciation Day, and the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center (KCDC) is celebrating educators all week long.
The discovery center hosts over 10,000 field trip students a year, with about four field trips a day during this busy season before school lets out. The Discovery Shop, to help celebrate teachers this week, is having a 10% discount for educators all week long.
The KCDC is a museum that is completely centered around educational play, and its staff believe kids learn best by doing and playing. The KCDC is also, in light of Teacher Appreciation Week, giving visitors a chance to share memories of their favorite teachers or of educators who have had a big impact on their lives.
“Here in the makerspace at the discovery center, we have a special tree right here behind me where kids are able to leave special messages for teachers whom they have had or have right now,” said the KCDC’s Director of Marketing Laura Burton.

“They can take those with them to give to teachers, or they can leave them here on the trees, Burton continued. “We’ve had a few adults participate in that, too, because as many of us know, those teachers you have, you remember for a long time.”
The discovery center will be celebrating teachers until Sunday, May 10. You can find the KCDC in Topeka at 4400 SW 10th Ave. and its website by clicking here.
