WAMEGO (KSNT) – Police officers from across the Sunflower State were in Wamego Thursday for a specialized training session aimed at expanding resources and opportunities for rural law enforcement agencies.
Around ten officers participated in the free training hosted by Task Force 70, a nonprofit organization focused on supporting police departments serving small and rural communities.
Organizers with the group said many rural agencies face similar dangers and challenges as larger departments, but often do not have access to the same level of advanced training or resources.
John Chapman, director of Task Force 70, said the organization hopes to close that gap by providing officers with additional instruction and attention to detail that may otherwise be unavailable in smaller departments.
“As American law enforcement has gotten older, not as individuals, but as an institution, we’ve started to lose some of that attention to detail,” Chapman said. “What we’re trying to do with the foundation is bring that level of detail back. These officers are very capable and very smart; they just don’t always get the initial training opportunities.”
