JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) — Hundreds of people were at the Milford Nature Center last Sunday celebrating Mother’s Day by purchasing new plants for their backyards.
The center was hosting its annual Mother’s Day Wildflower Sale, encouraging visitors to buy native plants instead of traditional store-bought flowers. They say buying native not only helps butterflies and bees but also helps fight the effects of drought.
“It’s mainly to help people understand how native plants help the butterflies in our community or the bees, and we always have to impress upon people that it’s best to use natural product instead of going out and buying seeds that maybe have toxin of them,” said Kim Bontrager, president of the Milford Friends Group.
The sale has become a springtime tradition for many families, with some returning year after year to grow their gardens and learn more about conservation.
Mother’s Day kicks off gardening season for Kansans
“It’s been going on for 20 some years. It’s become something people look forward to, and people come and people enhance their garden just a little bit more… Wildflowers are not easy to start, but once you get them started, you’re kind of addicted to the passion,” Bontrager said.
Buying native may just be the best gift for mother nature this Mother’s Day.
