TOPEKA (KSNT) — It was a successful trip to North Dakota for the Hornets.
Emporia State football clinched a season-opening win, 36-30, on the road against Minot State.
After trailing 6-0 early, Ben Harris kept the ball for a nine-yard rush up the middle for a touchdown. The successful extra point gave the Hornets a 7-6 lead.
In the second, Harris found an open Trenden Collins for a 15-yard touchdown pass to maintain ESU’s one-point lead, 13-12. Clem McCullough would find success on the ground for a successful two-point conversion, as the Hornets lead 15-12.
Emporia continued to be triumphant on the ground as Victor Chionuma rushed for two yards up the middle to grab the touchdown. A good extra point extended the lead, 22-12.
The Hornets would repeat as Charles Morgan picked up a two-yard rushing touchdown with a successful kick, leading 29-12.
The Beavers would score two touchdowns to kick off the fourth quarter, missing any additional points to cut ESU’s lead to 29-24.
Less than a minute later, Harris would unleash a 75-yard pass to Ethan Schultze for the touchdown, 36-24.

A three-yard rushing touchdown would be a last-ditch effort for the Beavers, who were able to cut Emporia State’s lead to 36-30.
Harris went 25-for-41, totaling 237 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
The Hornets will return to the Sunflower State when they head out to Pittsburg on Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
