TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office welcomed its new K-9, Chase.
Chase is a year and a half old Belgian Malinois from Holland. He is one of seven K-9s at the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. He specializes in narcotic detection and patrol.
He is able to sniff out drugs like marijuana, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and more.
“He’s been doing great. He’s coming along. He’s still learning some things, but he’s doing really well. He’s picking things up, and he’s been a great asset to our sheriff’s office,” said Deputy Ryan Luckert, handler for K-9 Chase.
This is Deputy Luckert’s first K-9 at the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. They have been training together since March of this year. They went through a 10-week course.
They start them from start to finish, from them not knowing anything to certifying them.
“He’s the youngest one we have, so he’s got a lot more energy than the rest of the dogs do. So it’s kind of nice to have that in the unit,” said Sergeant Matt Boling, who oversees the K-9 Unit.
This Sunday, September 13th, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its 3rd annual K-9 games at Stormont Vail Event Center.
It starts at 1 pm, and K-9s from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Topeka Police Department, the Lawrence Police Department, and, of course, the Sheriff’s Office will be participating.
