TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka fire personnel are set to visit a north Topeka mobile home park Wednesday evening to ensure that smoke detectors are functioning properly following a deadly Labor Day fire.
Kimberly Qualls, a City of Topeka spokeswoman, said in a press release that Topeka Fire Department (TFD) personnel will be visiting the Coachlight North Village community at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 at 195 NE Coachlight Dr. as part of a smoke alarm safety outreach effort. She said TFD staff will provide residents with fire safety information and other resources.
Multiple people, including a firefighter and two police officers, were injured in a recent fire on Sept. 7 that occurred at the mobile home park. The fire also claimed the life of a child, nine-year-old Alexander Honea of Topeka.
TFD personnel will use a door-to-door approach in the community to make sure all residents have the proper fire safety resources they need and make sure smoke detectors are functioning. Fire crews will also provide information about the TFD’s Smoke Alarm Program, including how people can request free smoke alarm installations.
