TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local law enforcement raised money for the Special Olympics through the third annual K-9 Games at Stormont Vail Event Center last weekend.
A group of 14 K-9 handlers from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Topeka Police Department, Lawrence Kansas Police Department and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office put the skills of their K-9 officers to the test in front of a packed crowd. Judges ranked their performances in three different events.
“So, we had one where it tested speed,” said K-9 handler at Topeka Police Department, Patrick Lauver. “We had one where it tested agility. Yeah, well, two actually; they tested agility. One, they had to go through bungee cords and another one where they had to run through a tunnel and then through a window and find the bite suit.”
“There were some bragging rights earned today that the other guys are just going to have to eat for another year,” said Matt Boling, who oversees the K-9 unit at the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. “Until we have it again. But it’s all fun in the end. I mean, it’s good working with other agencies, and we all know each other. We all train together, work together. So, it’s just it’s fun all the way around.”

All of the donations go to Special Olympics, and if you missed it this year, don’t worry; they plan to have it again next year.
