TOPEKA (KSNT) – With school back in session and flu season right around the corner, a local college is giving out free flu shots and allowing nursing students to get some practice by administering them.
Thursday marked the first of this year’s pop-up flu clinics at Washburn University. Almost 50 students took the time to get vaccinated on Sept. 24.
The goal is to build nursing students’ confidence in administering vaccines and give students more access to the vaccines around campus.
“These pop-up clinics are a really nice opportunity for us to collaborate with our partners in the Harmony J. Hines School of Nursing and to give the nursing students an opportunity to practice that skill set because it is a skill to administer an immunization or a vaccine of any kind,” said Tiffany McManis, director of student health services at Washburn University.
“I learned a lot from when I was first starting out to now how to get vaccines. And honestly, it’s just kind of like a natural state for me now,” said Arianah Reynoso, a Washburn University nursing student.
