Authorities warned drivers not to take dirt roads due to flooding. Otherwise, “your vehicle will be stuck there for many days and possibly ticketed as well,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
Heavy rain battered much of Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday, and Mitchell County is under a flood warning. The sheriff’s office said there had been more than 5 inches in the area.

A photo from the sheriff’s office showed a chasm stretching across the road, with pieces of the broken blacktop in the hole.
“This is a reminder to everyone that you could fall into a deep hole while traveling in the dark stormy nights, possibly storm chasing, looking into the dark skies not paying attention to the roadway in front of you,” the sheriff’s office said.
