TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating after a deadly officer-involved shooting in southwest Topeka Sunday.
Officers with the Topeka Police Department (TPD) responded to a local home just before 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the 3100 block of Southwest Chelsea Drive to attempt to locate a man regarding a potential violation of a protection order. Police arriving at the scene made contact with the man, who then ran from officers to a bedroom at the residence.
Officers reportedly pursued the man into the home. Police said the man gained access to a firearm inside the home.
An officer reportedly ordered the man to drop the weapon several times. Both one officer and the man fired their weapons during the incident.
The TPD said medical personnel declared the man dead at the scene. No TPD officers were injured during this incident.
The KBI identified the victim of the shooting as Michael Wayne Schmidt, 47, of Topeka.
KBI agents are investigating this incident. Both TPD officers who responded to this situation are on administrative leave.
