TOPEKA (KSNT) – A major road work project in southwest Topeka still has weeks to go before drivers regain full access to a stretch of Southwest Fairlawn Road.
We checked in with the City of Topeka on Wednesday, Oct. 7 to find out where things currently stand with its ongoing road improvement project on Southwest Fairlawn Road and when locals can expect to see the project completed. City staff report the project should be wrapped up by January 2027.
City officials previously announced the project, which is focused on Southwest Fairlawn Road from Southwest 28th Street to Southwest 22nd Place, would be completed by the fall of 2026. Work began on the project on Aug. 18, 2025.
Workers with Sunflower Paving are currently working on cast-in-place storm structures north of Southwest 25th Street and at Southwest 24th Street, according to the City of Topeka.
City staff said the project includes various road improvement work such as patching, curb replacement, replacement and modernization of some sidewalks and ramps along with repairs on a bridge that crosses over the Shunganunga Creek. The over $8.1 million project is being funded through the citywide half-cent sales tax alongside federal, bonded and utility funds.
