TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka drivers be warned – police will be increasing speed limit enforcement efforts this month.
Kimberly Qualls with the City of Topeka announced in a press release that police will be stepping up efforts to stop speeding drivers in the Capital City from Oct. 8-19. This is part of a larger statewide push by law enforcement to enforce posted speed limits.
Qualls said drivers in Topeka can expect to see more law enforcement on local roadways in the city and throughout the rest of Kansas. Law enforcement personnel will be focusing on bringing down speeding-related crashes that could result in injuries and deaths.
Police officials report that speeding is a dangerous behavior that can lead to crashes as traveling at higher speeds can reduce a person’s ability to react to unexpected situations on the road. Drivers traveling at speeds higher than the posted speed limit can increase the dangers of traveling on the road not just for themselves, but for other travelers as well.
181 of more than 3,700 crashes reported in 2024 were speed-related, according to a report from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). This accounts for 5.4% of all reported crashes in Kansas two years ago.

Qualls said the Topeka Police Department is encouraging drivers to obey all posted speed limits and to stay alert while driving in the city. Police also ask that drivers adjust their speed during weather-related situations.
