TOPEKA (KSNT) – With the home opener just days away, the Scarecrows are on the ice practicing plays and figuring out lines before puck drop this Friday.
The Scarecrows are back here at Landon Arena getting ready to take on the Indiana Sentinels on Friday, Oct. 16. We spoke with both a new and returning player, and they talked about how excited they are for this season to start.
One of the most impactful veteran forwards from last season, Trevor Grasby, told 27 News that all their hard work this summer has them ready for this Friday’s home opener.
“To be a hard-nosed, physical hockey team. We have a ton of skill up front and on our defense, so we’ll score lots of goals,” Grasby said. “But we’re going to be a defense-first team, and we got some guys in this dressing room that are going to be able to protect the boys out there. At the same time.”

Tristen Wells, a 6″6′ new forward for the Topeka Scarecrows, said there are many different personalities on the team that make every day unique.
“Been ramping up,” Wells said. “The intensity and practice has been going great. It’s a bunch of different guys from a bunch of different backgrounds. So, it’s fun. Every day is unique.”
Friday will be Scarecrows’ new head coach Ahmed Mahfouz coaching debut. He has years of professional hockey experience under his belt in the FPHL as a player.
Mahfouz told 27 News this is a well-rounded, ready-to-play new team that is excited to show off what they have to offer this season.
“The preparation started all summer, but now the preparation is really, really underway. And this is game week now, so it’s looking good, and we’re making good strides already,” Mahfouz said.
