TOPEKA (KSNT) – Winter is on the way and state transportation officials are showing off a new tool that drivers across Kansas can use to find out what roads have been recently plowed of snow.
Kim Stich with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) said in a press release on Oct. 15 that its new “Plow Locations Tool” is now available.
Drivers can to use this tool to see where snowplows are actively treating roads during winter weather events. People can find it on KanDrive.gov by following these instructions:
- Head to KanDrive.gov or download the KanDrive app
- In the top left corner, click on “What are you Looking for?”
- Click the orange “Plow Locations Tool”
Stich said the tool shows where snowplows are operating throughout the state and indicates their direction of travel while displaying the routes traveled during the previous two hours. KDOT updates map data every minute.
“We’re committed to providing Kansans with timely and reliable information during winter weather events,” said KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed. “This new tool helps travelers see where crews are actively working while also providing a better understanding of the effort required to keep highways open and safe during a storm.”
Why the deer ‘rut’ could be bad news for drivers in Kansas
KDOT personnel will operate 12 trucks across Kansas that are equipped with cameras that show dashcam images on KanDrive.gov. People looking at the online map tool will see each plow marked with orange arrow icons that indicate their direction of travel. KDOT snowplows equipped with dash cams that the public can view will appear as blue truck icons.
“Behind every plow shown on the map is a KDOT employee working to improve travel conditions,” Reed said. “This tool gives the public a real-time view of that work and another resource to help them make informed travel decisions.”
