TOPEKA (KSNT) – City officials will temporarily reopen an intersection in central Topeka to traffic while construction work continues in the area.
City staff shared in a press release that Southwest 17th Street has been temporarily reopened to traffic traveling east and west where it meets with Southwest Topeka Boulevard as of Oct. 15. City staff said the temporary change is meant to improve traffic flow through the area while workers wait for equipment to be brought in.
Staff with the city’s Public Works Department determined that reopening the intersection temporarily was the best option for local drivers while the equipment is delivered. City personnel anticipate closing Southwest 17th Street again to eastbound and westbound traffic starting on Nov. 16.
Workers closed the intersection of Southwest 17th Street and Southwest Topeka Boulevard last month. This was done as part of an ongoing road improvement project on Southwest Topeka Boulevard from Southwest 15th Street to Southwest 21st Street.

Work crews got started on the overall project in September last year. It includes major infrastructure improvements along Topeka Boulevard such as water main replacement, installation of new sidewalks and reconstruction of the boulevard.
City staff said through traffic on Southwest Topeka Boulevard will remain open to northbound and southbound travelers throughout the project. People traveling along this section of the boulevard should expect slower travel times.
