TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shawnee County officials are getting ready to hold an open house meeting next week to inform locals about a major Kansas Turnpike interchange project.
Shawnee County staff announced on social media that people can take part in the open house from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at Washburn Rural North Middle School located at 2800 SW Auburn Road west of Topeka. During the meeting, attendees will be able to learn more about the Auburn Road Regional Transportation Study.
Officials with the Kansas Department of Transportation and Shawnee County are coordinating efforts to complete the study as plans are put in place for a potential new I-335 Kansas Turnpike Interchange west of the Capital City. The plans also include possible extensions north of I-70 to Highway 24 and east to Highway 75.

“This study is an opportunity to take a long-term look at transportation needs along the Auburn Road corridor and throughout the surrounding region,” said Shawnee County Public Works Director Curt Niehaus. “Public input is an important part of that process, and we encourage residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to attend the open house, review the concepts, and share their perspectives with the project team.”
Shawnee County Commissioners recently approved an over $800,000 contract with a consultant firm for the Auburn Road Regional Transportation Study in June this year. The completion date of the study was listed as Nov. 1, 2027.
Shawnee County staff said the upcoming open house will not include a formal presentation for attendees. People who want to share their thoughts on the study and proposed interchange project are encouraged to attend the open house or take part in an online survey.
