TOPEKA (KSNT) – Coffey County Sheriff Thomas Johnson and Zombie 2k/5k event coordinator Lauren Hull stopped by the 27 News Studio to talk about an upcoming event.
The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Special Olympics Kansas, COF Training Services and Burling USD 244 Unified Sports to host the Zombie 2k/5k on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 24. The goal of the event is to raise money for Special Olympics Kansas.
As of Friday, Oct. 23, the event has raised over $12,000 and surpassed the original $10,000 goal. Johnson emphasized that the community has come together to support the race.
“We’re very lucky where we live,” Johnson said. “Coffey County is a very giving county. Lauren set up a $10,000 threshold is what she thought that she could raise, and the community support has been unbelievably great, and we’re over that, so we’re very thankful.”
The different races include a 5k bike, 5k run/walk and a 2k run/walk. Since the $10,000 goal has been passed, all participants will be registered for free.
“We said that if we raise $10,000 then the event itself would be free, so anybody can participate,” Hull said. “Anybody can come join us and we hope they do because we’ll have Special Olympics athletes there and they are an amazing group in our community and they just want people there to cheer them on.”
People interested in participating are still eligible to register up until the event begins Saturday morning.
“We don’t care whether you want to ride a bike, drive your car, the more the merrier,” Johnson said. “If you haven’t seen the special Olympics group, how much they enjoy this and the participation and the support they get from our community, it’s unbelievable.”
