TOPEKA (KSNT) — An emotional victory for the Trojans.
Topeka High defeated Lawrence 2-1 (5-2 PKs) on Monday night to advance to the Class 6A Regional Final, where they’ll play the winner of Free State and Liberal.
The Lions had a 1-0 lead heading into the second half.
After a few minutes of play, Topeka High’s Carlos Accosta-Martinez would find Juan Lopez who would score to tie things up at 1-1.
The game would remain tied at the end of regulation. After two 10 minute periods of extra play, the game was still tied.
That would send the match to a penalty shootout; five players were selected to kick for each team.
Junior Jose Garcia-Escobar would net the first one for the Trojans, while junior goalkeeper Willy Rizo would make a save on the Lions’ first attempt.
Up next, junior Wyatt Jones would add on, while Lawrence’s shot would go wide-right. Topeka had the 2-0 PK advantage.
Senior Sante Ovalle would net another one for the Trojans, as pressure builds on for Lawrence. Senior Jasper Piepergerdes would knock one in for the Lions, keeping them in the fight, but they’d need some help.
Accosta-Martinez would step up for the winner-take-all kick and score to advance to next round of 6A Regionals.
