TOPEKA (KSNT) – The winter season is quickly approaching and with the seasonal changes comes colder temperatures and higher energy bills.
Staff with the Kansas Gas Service announced in a press release on Oct. 28 some proactive steps homeowners can take to help reduce energy usage and avoid an uptick in monthly bills. Some of the ways customers can prepare their homes include:
- Sealing air leaks around doors and windows
- Adding weather stripping where required
- Cleaning or replacing HVAC filters
- Lowering the thermostat when not home or sleeping
“Many customers don’t realize they can help reduce their winter energy use and monthly energy
costs,” said Lisa Holleron, vice president of Operations for Kansas Gas Service. “The steps they
take now, from improving their home’s energy efficiency to enrolling in the Average Payment
Plan, can help reduce surprises and provide more predictability during the heating season.”
The Kansas Gas Service has also released an Average Payment Plan (APP) that helps reduce seasonal swings in natural gas bills by distributing costs evenly throughout the year. APP calculates payments using a 12-month average and adjusts over time based on energy use and natural gas costs.

Officials said the best time to prepare for winter energy bills is before winter arrives, and customers who act now use less energy, lower bills and improve comfort at home. To find out more information about APP or the Kansas Gas Service, click here.
