TOPEKA (KSNT) – Community partners and students worked together Friday to boost local biodiversity during a pollinator event in southwest Topeka.
Staff with the City of Topeka and All Things Great n’ Small alongside students from Topeka Collegiate School teamed up on Nov. 7 for a pollinator planting event at 3450 SW Belle Ave. Students helped plant native milkweed species to support pollinators like monarch butterflies.
“These are helpful plants that they promote great things like hummingbirds and butterflies, which monarch butterflies need to live,” said Daniel Walker with All Things Great n’ Small. “You know, at the same time teaching these kids about ecology, how these really important connections of the random plants you see on the side of the road, how that might be a keystone to the ecology of their community.”

The project uses butterfly weed, swamp milkweed and common milkweed, which also help reduce erosion and strengthen native habitats.
