EMPORIA (KSNT) – The Bird scooter services in the City of Emporia will soon be terminated.

On March 18, the city staff received a letter from Bird announcing an end to its service. The letter from Bird said the company doesn’t see an immediate path to building an enduring business in Emporia.

“We are grateful for your partnership and hope to have the opportunity to return in the future as the macroeconomic environment recovers,” the letter said.

City of Emporia Communications Manager Christine Torrens said the service termination wasn’t a city decision and wasn’t discussed in the most recent commissioner’s meeting.

“Per our agreement, this email serves as our termination notice of the contract,” the letter from Bird to the City of Emporia said.

In December 2023, Bird Global announced it had filed for bankruptcy protection to stabilize its finances. The company found itself struggling to survive after losing more than $430 million since the end of 2021.
