Update 2:53 p.m.: The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has reopened Northwest Carlson Road and is no longer assisting with the fire.

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media a road in northwest Shawnee County is closed while crews respond to a large fire.

Firefighters responded to the report around 1:30 p.m. at I-70 and Northwest Carlson Road south of Willard. The sheriff’s office is asking residents to avoid the area while crews work the scene.

A 27 News reporter on the scene says the fire appears to have started as a controlled burn that got out of control. There are currently a couple volunteer fire trucks and tractors working to extinguish the fire.
