TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shoppers in Kansas should check their kitchens to see if they have a product linked to a multi-state salmonella outbreak.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are in investigating a salmonella contamination of herbs that were sold at Trader Joe’s stores.

Health officials said salmonella was found in Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil packaged in 2.5 oz. clamshell packaging. This brand of basil is being sold in Trader Joe’s locations in Kansas and more than a dozen other states. To view the list of states impacted, click here.

The company has voluntarily removed all Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil packages from the stores shelves. The product is no longer available for customers to purchase.

The FDA advises consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers and not eat organic basil from Trader Joes from Kansas or any other location. The FDA has a advise for safe handling and cleaning if a surface or container may have come in contact with a product to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, according to the FDA. Illnesses from a salmonella infections typically occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

According to the FDA, you should contact your health care provider if you believe you may have symptoms of a salmonella infection after eating Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil.
