Republicans are more united over the party and its goals the further one gets away from Washington, D.C., Sen. Rick Scott insisted Monday.
“Look, what’s going on in Washington is not what’s going on around in the country,” the Florida Republican, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told “CBS This Morning.” “What’s going on around the country is people say, ‘I want my job, I want my kids back in school, I want to fund law enforcement, I want a safe community, I want a strong military, I want a country that stands up to dictators.’ That’s what the Republican Party’s going to do, and the Democrats are doing the opposite.”
Scott added that even before members of the party gathered for the Conservative Political Action Conference over the weekend in Orlando, he had put a memo out to GOP activists, party leaders, and more that the “Republican civil war has been canceled.”
Scott also predicted a “great 2022” midterm election period for his party.
“The Republicans are going to take the House, the Senate, and I believe the former president is right, we’re going to win the White House in 2024,” said Scott.
But even with there being Republicans who are speaking out against former President Donald Trump, Scott encouraged the show’s watchers to go around his state and talk to people about the issues.
“When I ran for governor I talked about the issues,” he said. “That’s how I won. That’s how we’re going to win in ’22. We’re going to talk about things people care about, jobs, education, law enforcement. … They’re not talking about what party leaders are — you know, anything they’re saying about each other. That’s why the civil war is absolutely canceled.”
Scott also defended his opposition to the Democrats’ massive $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill, saying that the amount being sought is too much, and it’s not targeted.
“This is about paying back liberal politicians,” he said. “It’s not about getting our country back to normal again. Let’s focus on the vaccine. Let’s focus on testing. Let’s focus on helping people who lost their job. Let’s focus on getting our businesses going again. That’s not what this bill does.”
