Shawnee County bars, restaurants ordered to close by 9 p.m.

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Shawnee County commissioners approved an emergency order by Health Officer Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino Thursday, ordering bars and restaurants to close by 9 p.m.

Restaurant owners around town all said the same thing. “It is what it is.” For the owner of Skinny’s Sports Bar and Grill, he was hoping health leaders would wait until after Thanksgiving to make the change because it’s usually a very busy week. But he said he knows safety comes first.

“You know everybody is dealing with it around the world,” said Mark Schonlaw, the owner. “Not just in Topeka and not just at Skinny’s so we just have to make the best of it.”

This new order begins on Friday and will last until Dec. 15. The county will then reevaluate the order.
