TOPEKA (KSNT) — At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, patients are able to receive treatment without receiving a single bill for their care.

KSNT 27 News spoke with Anna, a former patient at St. Jude. When asked about her battle with cancer and what “St. Jude” means to her, this was her response.

“In a sense, whenever you are diagnosed, you have no idea what’s in store for you moving forward,” Anna said. “So, I felt like, for a while, my life was put on pause. And, it was definitely hard as a junior about to be a senior in college, like everyone’s doing the things, getting the internship, following up on what they’re going to do next with their life, and that wasn’t even within the realm of processing. And, so for me, St. Jude was just hope for a future outside of this because when you’re inside the walls, all you see is the people around you everyday and you don’t see a future. So, for me, it’s just hope to be able to be someone after this.”

Helping patients like Anna is one of the reasons 27 News partners with St. Jude. Collaborations like the St. Jude Dream Home Campaign, the Topeka community is able to help patients like Anna.
