TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka leaders say crews are continuing their efforts to combat the homeless issue in the Capital City.

At the mayor’s monthly press conference, Topeka City leaders discussed the ongoing work to clean up homeless camps near the Kansas River. In February, city crews cleaned up 177 tons of trash and debris from one cleanup. Another cleanup happened just last month.

Interim City Manager Richard Nienstedt said in the mayor presser that the city is working with social service agencies to help people get back on their feet.

“We can’t solve homelessness, that simply is not what the city can do,” Nienstedt said. “But what the city can do is help make opportunities available to have a better life and to work their way out of being homeless.”

He said the city is still working with Sylver Consulting to come up with a homeless plan, and anticipates a report will be presented to city council within the next month or so.
