Highland Park vs. Topeka West: Game Recap

For the first Friday in October, the 1440 KMAJ sports team took a short trip to see two 501 schools clash. Topeka West and Highland Park were in search for their first win and a step in the right direction.

Topeka West set the tone early on it’s first two offensive series, and from their the offenses exploded.

The Chargers and the Highland Park Scots came into this game averaging 17 points per game, combined. Those averages will increase after Topeka West’s 43-26 victory.

The Chargers established the running game early, capping off a methodical 13-play drive with an 8-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Hunter McDaniel. After recovery the onside kick, McDaniel found junior receiver Vincent Parker for a 48-yard touchdown pass to take an early 14-0 lead.

Highland Park’s signal caller would not back down. Senior quarterback Will White responded with a 55-yard touchdown run to get Scots on the board. However, the Scots could not contain West in the first half, getting outscored 33-12 by halftime.

McDaniel finished the game 13 of 24 with 208 passing yards and three touchdown passes. He also ran for two touchdowns. Freshman running back Clifton Hollman led the Chargers in rushing with 150 yards on 23 carries, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.

White led all players in total yards, earning 295 yards on just 15 carries, including the 55-yard touchdown run as well as a 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Highland Park out gained Topeka West in total yards 490 to 440. However, the team fumbled five times and lost an interception. West lost two fumbles in the game as well.

Highland Park will host co-Centennial League champion Shawnee Heights next Friday. The Chargers will face rival Topeka High at Hummer Sports Park.
